Scayles Music in Edinburgh became part of Hobgoblin Music in 2019. The shop has a long history as Edinburgh's friendly music shop, specialising in rock'n'roll supplies but also catering for the wider musical world with traditional and classical instruments. Now, with the addition of our specialist folk and acoustic range, you'll find the full works at Hobgoblin Music & Scayles in Edinburgh.
We buy and sell a huge selection of different musical instruments and accessories, from the usual instruments everyone knows and loves like Guitars and Mandolins to the weird and wonderfully exotic one such as udu’s and Dulcimers. We pride ourselves on having the best range of traditional musical instruments in Edinburgh and, for some instruments, the whole of Scotland. We have an extensive range of Mandolins, Mandolas, Bouzoukis, Banjos, Traditional Folk Whistles and Flutes in our Edinburgh store. Whether it’s traditional Scottish Folk Music, Irish session tunes or Rock'n'Roll, we can help you find the instruments and accessories you need.
We are in the South Side/ Newington area on the corner of St Patrick Square/Buccleuch Place. Pay & Display parking is available at St Patrick square right by the shop.
We're a 10 minute walk from Waverly station, and nearby bus stops on Nicolson Street are served by several major bus services.

We do repairs! We carry out some instrument repair work on site, and can also send instruments to specialist repairers for more complicated work. Repair work undertaken includes ukulele, bouzouki, mandolin and guitar setups and restringing, accordion, melodeon and concertina tuning and repairs, woodwind and brass repairs and maintenance, specialist violin set ups and repairs, bridge and peg fitting, bow rehairs, banjo or drum skin replacement, and much more besides – contact us for information or bring in your instrument for a free, no-obligation quote.
If you're looking to sell a musical instrument then get in touch to see what we can offer you. We buy some instruments outright if the price is right, and we'll consider a trade-in for almost any instrument. We also take lots of instruments on a commission basis, and we're particularly keen to stock instruments by local luthiers and makers. Bring in your unwanted guitars, ukuleles, banjos, concertinas, melodeons, accordions, flutes, woodwind and brass instruments, violins, keyboards and more, and we'll see what we can do for you! If your instrument is bulky or you would need to travel a fair way to get to us, please do contact us by email or phone first so we can let you know whether it's worth bringing in.
We are often able to offer short or long term musical instrument rentals for various types of instrument. If you would like to rent a musical instrument from us, please get in touch to find out how we can help.
There are many teachers listed on our site that specialise in a range of instruments including: Free Reed, Frets, Guitar, Percussion, Piano, Strings, Vocal and Woodwind.
This isn’t just a 'Guitar Shop' – we have the largest range of different musical instruments in town. We try and keep a decent range of instruments in every different section of the shop – from more inexpensive beginners instruments through to professional models in the upper price ranges. Our friendly staff are always at hand to help with guiding you through the differences between the instruments to help you find what is best for you. None of our staff are on commission, and we will never try to sell you things we feel you don’t need. If we feel you don’t need to buy anything at all we will happily tell you! Our job is firstly to advise and help rather than just try to sell products. This is what we feel is the benefit of still having traditional style music shops – customers can visit the shop, try the instruments and receive constructive advise, rather than just having everything available online.
We are open 7 days a week and love having visitors to the shop but if you can’t make it in you can contact us by phone or email, we are always happy to help.
If you can’t find what you are looking for why not get in touch and we’ll see what we can do.
